CLOSING the achievement gap
National Program - By the People - Airs at 5:00 pm
Albuquerque, NM -- Public television station KNME-TV, Channel 5 (Albuquerque/Santa Fe), the New Mexico Public Education Department, and Youth Development, Incorporated (YDI) gathered approximately 100 citizens, making up a representative sample of New Mexico, to discuss the pressing problem of the educational achievement gap in New Mexico, on Saturday, October 29. The resulting television program from that discussion will air on Sunday, November 13th, 2005 at 5:00 pm with the New Mexico Follow-up airing at 6:00 pm.
This event was part of a national Deliberation Week, when nearly 1000 Americans, in 15 cities across the country, participated in Citizen Deliberations to discuss one of two critically important issues facing the nation: healthcare or education. KNME-TV5 joins the MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour and local PBS stations from across the country in presenting this unique program.
Secretary of Education, Dr. Veronica C. García said, “I hope as many people as possible will watch this program and engage in the discussion. When parents, teachers, school administrators and all members of the community become actively involved in conversations about education, I know that working together; we will find lasting solutions towards closing the achievement gap and raising academic performance for all students.”
