Secretary García Hosts Community Conversation in Albuquerque with Principals from Across the State

( Santa Fe, NM)— Today, Secretary of Education, Dr. Veronica C. García will host a community conversation from 3:00-5:00 pm with approximately 40 Principals from across New Mexico at the Sheraton Old Town in Albuquerque.

During the conversation, Secretary García will show data about the achievement gap in New Mexico to the Principals and then ask Principals to brainstorm about the root causes of the achievement gap. The purpose of the meeting is to try to find lasting solutions as well as tactical strategies those Principals can employ in their schools to help close the achievement gap.

Secretary García said, “I am looking forward to meeting with Principals today. Closing the achievement gap is my top educational reform priority. Principals are the instructional leaders of their schools. They are the ones that set the tone for their community of learners. It is critical that they fully understand the concepts we are promoting to improve educational outcomes for their students.”

Secretary García’s conversation today with Principals is part of a statewide community conversation tour that she is implementing. She hosted a community conversation in April in the town of Bernalillo, and in May she met in Albuquerque with business leaders from around the state for a community conversation. In June, she met with teachers from around the State in Santa Fe. Today’s conversation with Principals is the first of three conversations she has planned for the month of July. On the 22 of July she will meet in Cloudcroft with New Mexico School Board Association members, and on the 29 th of July she will meet at the American Federation of Teachers Albuquerque office with AFT members as well as members of the PTA and the League of Women Voters.
