( Santa Fe, NM)— The New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) published five new or amended rules the beginning of this month that will affect New Mexico children in the areas of emergency drills, competitive food sales, wellness, health education and physical education.
The public is invited to comment on these rules, which can be found at http://www.state.nm.us, through Friday, January 6, 2006. After that date, Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica C. García will review comments and approve the rules. After approval, the rules will be formally filed with the State Records and Archives Center and become effective on the date stated in the rules.
Two public hearings will be held to discuss the five rules. One forum is scheduled for Wednesday, January 4, 2006 in the Las Cruces Public Schools Board Room, 505 South Main, Suite #249, Loretto Towne Center, in Las Cruces. The second forum will be held on Friday, January 6, 2006 at the Toney Anaya Building, 2550 Cerrillos Road, Rio Grande Room, in Santa Fe. Both forums will begin at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 3:15 p.m. on those days.
Each of the five rules will be discussed for one hour. Amending the rule to Add Emergency Drills will be discussed from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Adopting a new rule Nutrition: Competitive Food Sales will be discussed fro 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Adopting a new rule for Wellness is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Amending the rule to add Health Education Performance Standards will be discussed from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Amending the rule to add Physical Education Performance Standards is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
