Secretary García Hosts Community Conversation For Shiprock Community December 15, 2005
[ Albuquerque] – On Thursday, December 15, 2005, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, New Mexico Education Secretary Veronica C. García will host a “Community Conversation on Closing the Achievement Gap” at the Shiprock Chapter House , located off of Highway US 64, just north of the town of Shiprock, New Mexico.
“Since April of last year, I have held 22 community conversations across New Mexico. These conversations have reinforced my belief in the power of conversation and the ability of the community to find lasting solutions,” Secretary García said, “Closing the achievement gap and raising expectations for all of New Mexico’s students are both key components of our education reform initiative. In terms of achievement gap data, Native Americans are the lowest performing group when the data is disaggregated by ethnicity. For this reason, I am particularly looking forward to talking with and listening to community members of Shiprock as we work together to understand the root causes of the achievement gap on Thursday evening.”
Parents, teachers, students and members the Shiprock community are invited to attend and participate in the discussion. For more information about the Shiprock Community Conversation, please contact Larry Emerson emerson714@frontiernet.net or (505) 360-8968.
