Public Education Commission to Meet in Las Cruces

(Santa Fe NM)—The Public Education Commission (PEC) will meet on Friday, September 17, beginning at 9:00 a.m., in the Las Cruces Public Schools’ board room located at 505 S. Main in Las Cruces. The agenda for the meeting is available on the Public Education Department’s (PED) web site as follows: http://www.ped.state.nm.us/pec/agendas/agenda.9.17.04.pdf

Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica C. García will update the PEC on the voluntary four-year-old preschool program and will request input on a rule to require that student transcripts include the 11th-grade criterion-referenced test. She will also report on legislative initiatives under consideration for the 2005 Legislature and the preliminary public school support request.

The PEC will hear a report from its Five-Year Strategic Plan Committee and recognize two Las Cruces educators – Jim Smith of Mayfield High School on being named the New Mexico History Teacher of the Year and Vince Rivera, principal at Desert Hills Elementary School, for outstanding performance by his school.

At 1:00 p.m., the PEC will receive public input on a five-year strategic plan for education and on policy, governance and legislative issues.
