School Health Education Institute to be Held
October 19-20 in Albuquerque

(Santa Fe, NM)—The fifth-annual School Health Education Institute will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 19-20, at the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North, located at 5151 San Francisco Road, for high school educators who teach health education topics. The institute is sponsored by the Public Education Department (PED) and New Mexico Department of Health.

The Institute will focus on physical activity, safe schools, nutrition, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use prevention and sexuality education, including HIV prevention education.

The keynote address will be presented by Jacquelyn Sowers, M.Ed., of Sowers Associates, consultants in health promotion and education from Hampton, New Hampshire. She will speak on “Health and Learning: Twin Goals for Education for the 21st Century.” Sowers has worked in 49 states with educators, parents, clergy, health professionals and community leaders to develop healthier youth, families, schools and communities.

The goal is for educators to increase their capacity to integrate health topics into their primary curricular area, receive current information related to the topics they teach, discuss and plan integration strategies and expand on knowledge and skills to help students meet or exceed the required benchmarks and content standards for health and physical education.

The institute is free; however, pre-registration is required. For information, contact Kesselman-Jones, Inc. at 505-266-3451.
