Public Education Department and the Department of Health Team Up for New Mexico's Children

(Santa Fe, NM)--On November 8th and 9th the New Mexico Public Education Department, School Health Unit and the Department of Health, Office of School are sponsoring the 2nd Annual "Health is Elementary" a School Health Education Institute at the Holiday Inn on Mountain View. The goals of the Institute are to insure that New Mexico's children receive health education in school as early as possible. To that end, the Institute is offering training for elementary school teachers. Unlike, secondary school teachers who are sometimes required to teach health education in addition to their regular topics, all elementary school teachers are required to teach health education. Now, all elementary teachers will be fully trained to teach health education.

Attendees will leave the Institute with the following:

· An integrated approach to teaching Health

· Hands-on learning experiences that teachers can take into their classrooms including: simulated activities, handouts and sample lesson plans

· Age-appropriate resources.

The institute will provide comprehensive training including but not limited to:

Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs
HIV Prevention Education
Nutrition
Physical Activity
Safe Schools
