New Mexico Indian Education Advisory Council
To Meet November 17 in Bernalillo

(Santa Fe, NM)— The New Mexico Indian Education Advisory Council will hold a meeting on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 in Bernalillo at the Bernalillo School District Office Boardroom located at 224 N. Camino del Pueblo, from 1:00 –4:00 pm.

Penny Bird, Assistant Secretary for Indian Education, stated “this meeting is an important step in the action plan the advisory council developed for their work. The Council wants to explore the indicators of success that are set by public institutions and compare those with indicators that tribes and schools may want to consider in showing Native American student progress. Dr. White’s findings are critical because his data reveals the need to include indicators that consider traditional tribal and community values.”

The agenda includes an update on the council’s draft constitution and bylaws. This work also includes the revision of the 1978 New Mexico State Board of Education’s Indian Education Policy. The main agenda item will be a presentation by Dr. Kalvin White, an Advisory Council member, who will present a Navajo Nation study on student achievement.
