Public Education Department Awards Grants
For Bully Proofing School Program

(Santa Fe, NM)--The Public Education Department (PED) announced today that 24 schools and Regional Education Cooperatives will share grant funds to develop bully prevention programs. The programs will create safe learning environments that support student learning and academic achievement. The PED received $350,000 in 2004 under House Bill 2, the General Appropriations Act, for the programs.

Seventeen schools were awarded grants to implement Bully Proofing Your School programs and seven schools were awarded grants to implement a School-Wide Positive Behavior Support System within their programs.

Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica García said, “We are aware that a number of factors contribute to academic achievement and we want to insure that first and foremost our students feel safe when they are at school; unsafe schools can have a negative impact on student learning.”

Under the Bully Proofing Your School programs, students will receive instruction skills and strategies to avoid victimization. Programs will emphasize the concepts of empathy, taking a stand and creative problem solving.
