Public Education Commission to Meet in Santa Fe

(Santa Fe NM)--The Public Education Commission (PEC) will meet on Friday, November 5, beginning at 9:00 a.m., in Santa Fe at the Jerry Apodaca Education Building, Mabry Hall, located at 300 Don Gaspar. The agenda for the meeting is available on the Public Education Department’s (PED) web site as follows: http://www.ped.state.nm.us/pec/agendas/agenda.11.5.04.pdf.

Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica C. García will update the PEC on the New Mexico Pre-K plan and legislation under consideration for the 2005 Legislature. The PED will also be updated on the status of Indian education and student assessment. Assistant Superintendents Geri Romero-Roybal and Charles Hayes will present the comprehensive framework for supporting schools in need of improvement.

A proposal for adding a youth representative to the PEC will be made. And the PEC will recognize the 2005 New Mexico “Teacher of the Year,” Nancy Schick, a social studies teacher who has taught for 17 years at Los Alamos High School in Los Alamos.

At 1:00 p.m., the PEC will receive public input regarding education policy and governance issues. At the conclusion of the meeting, the PEC will go into executive session to discuss pending litigation.
