Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica C. Garcia Approves 154,648 Students for Elementary Arts Program Funding

(Santa Fe, NM)--Ninety-nine percent of all public elementary school students will receive arts programs in New Mexico this fall. Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica C. Garcia announced today that 154,648 public elementary school students from 87 school districts and 13 charter schools will receive funding for the program, as compared to 80,000 elementary students approved for funding last year.

The program was approved by the Legislature in 2003 to provide students with opportunities related to the visual arts, music, theater and dance and connect the arts across the curriculum using best practices. Twenty-two districts and two charter schools funded for 2004-2005 were also funded last year.

“Educational excellence is on the rise in New Mexico! With nearly 100% of public elementary school students approved for arts programming this fall, New Mexico is a national leader in fine arts in public schools. The true beneficiaries are the students who will have access to the arts, which will result in a richer curriculum and improved student achievement,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica C. García.

Applicants were encouraged to develop a unique arts program plan to provide students with opportunities to participate in activities related to visual arts, music, theater and dance and connect the arts across the curriculum using best practices, make use of and incorporate the art resources available within their communities and involve parents through the creation of parent advisory councils.
