Bilingual Education Day to be held January 27 At Legislature

(Santa Fe, NM)-- The New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) will join with the New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education (NMABE) in celebrating Bilingual Education Day at the Legislature on Tuesday, January 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

“This event is an excellent opportunity to highlight the richness of the languages and cultures in our state. Our celebration recognizes, celebrates and endorses the importance of Bilingual Education programs in New Mexico’s public schools,” said Dr. Gladys Herrera-Gurulé, the state director for Bilingual Education and Title III Programs at PED.

“New Mexico’s government has consistently been a national leader in supporting school programs that promote students to become proficient in English and in the home language as well as to become academically competent in all content areas. Bilingual Education Day at the State Capitol serves as a reminder to continue and strengthen this legacy,” she said.

The event will open on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in the State Capitol Rotunda, with opening remarks by Rosalinda Carrión-Altamirano, NMABE president, and other distinguished guests from the Legislature and PED.

Student groups will provide entertainment from noon to 1:00 pm. The East San José Mariachi Band will headline the entertainment. Several other student groups representative of the various languages and cultures that make New Mexico the Land of Enchantment will be present to entertain those visiting the Capitol on that day.
