Secretary García to
Announce Criterion-Referenced Test Results for Grades 4 and 8
(Santa Fe, NM)— Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica C. García will hold a media briefing on Thursday, August 19, at 11:00 a.m., to announce the results of the 2004 Standards-Based (criterion-referenced) Assessment in grades four and eight. The briefing will be held in Mabry Hall of the Jerry Apodaca Education Building, located at 300 Don Gaspar, in Santa Fe. State, district and school-level results and exemplary schools will be announced.
“The entire process of holding schools accountable for student academic performance begins with the release of testing results. They give parents an early indication of how their school is performing and schools and school superintendents the information they need to continue their efforts toward excellence.
“The state will release the 2004 school ratings on August 30. My goal is for everyone – educators, parents and students – to be fully prepared when the ratings are announced,” said Secretary Dr. García.
Joining her at the briefing will be Dr. Kurt Steinhaus, deputy secretary for learning and accountability, and Dr. Don E. Watson, assistant secretary for assessment and accountability.
The test was administered in the spring of 2004 to assess student performance in mathematics and language arts. The test was first administered in 2003. The 2003 results were announced on April 15.
On August 30, schools will be judged as making adequate yearly progress
if they’ve met New Mexico’s new academic and student performance
expectations in various student sub-groups as required by the federal
No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).
