Parents to Receive Early Indication of School Performance

(Santa Fe, NM)—Parents will receive an early indication of their child’s school performance. The Public Education Department (PED) will announce the results of criterion-referenced (CRT) or standards-based testing on Thursday, August 19, ahead of the previously announced date of August 30, so that parents can gauge how well their child’s school has performed overall.

“We are moving as quickly as we can to announce school ratings. But we’re caught between the old and the new system for rating schools. This is the first year for students to take the new test. While the ratings will not be provided until August 30, we can give parents a sense of how their school is performing.

“Releasing the CRT results ahead of schedule will give them an early indication of school performance. But the information on which parents will make their final decision will be the school ratings to be announced on August 30.

“The delay we are experiencing this year is unique and will not be an issue in future years. We hope that this early information will assist parents in making their decisions when the ratings are released,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica C. García.

The 2004 school ratings will inform parents as to whether a school is probationary and of its school improvement status.
