SDE to Hold Public Hearing on Accountability Rules

(Santa Fe, NM)--The New Mexico State Department of Education (SDE) will hold a public hearing to receive input on a proposed amendment to bring state regulation into compliance with the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and a proposed new regulation on unsafe schools. The hearing will be held on Thursday, October 16, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., at the SDE, Mabry Hall, located at 300 Don Gaspar in Santa Fe.

The amendment to State Board of Education Regulation 6.19.1 will align the state’s accountability regulations with federal NCLB requirements. The proposed new regulation (6.19.3) on unsafe schools will provide for the identification and correction of persistently dangerous schools as required under NCLB.

Written comments will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17. Comments may be mailed to Dr. William Blair, deputy director, Accountability and School Improvement Services Division, New Mexico State Department of Education, 300 Don Gaspar, Santa Fe, NM 87501-2786. They may be faxed to Dr. Blair at 505-827-4263 or emailed to him at bblair@ped.state.nm.us.
