SDE Announces $2.408 Million in IDEA and Technology Grant Awards (Santa Fe, NM)— The New Mexico State Department of Education (SDE) announced today that 27 public school districts and schools, including two state-supported schools, have been awarded $2.408 million in School Renovation, IDEA and Technology Grants to make school repairs and renovations and meet special education and renovation-related expenses. The purpose of the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) portion of the competitive grant program is to improve results for students with disabilities by increasing access to the general education curriculum in the least restrictive environment through the use of appropriate supplementary aids and services. “New Mexico must do more to educate its students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. It behooves us as educators to use every means, including technology, to do so,” said Steven A. Sánchez, the SDE’s acting assistant superintendent for Learning Services and Indian Education. Grant funds will be used to enhance ongoing professional development in the areas of accommodating and modifying curriculum through technology and the utilization of assistive technology, encouraging the use of effective technology-based strategies for assisting and assessing students with disabilities to meet performance goals and indicators per the state’s standards and assisting districts in the development and use of electronic means to support ongoing monitoring of student progress.
