Public Education Commission to Discuss Roles, Duties

(Santa Fe NM)—The New Mexico Public Education Commission (PEC) will discuss potential roles and duties at a meeting on Wednesday, January 7, 2004, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Jerry Apodaca Education Building, Mabry Hall, located at 300 Don Gaspar in Santa Fe. The discussion is scheduled for 2:45 p.m.

At 8:50 a.m., the PEC will honor Dan Salzwedel, retiring executive director of the New Mexico Activities Association, Katarina Sandoval of South Valley Academy in Albuquerque, the 2003 Milken Educator from New Mexico, Maria C. Martinez of Mountain View Elementary in Albuquerque and Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica C. Garcia, named 2003 Educator of the Year (Administrator) by the New Mexico Research and Study Council.

The PEC will hear reports beginning at 9:45 a.m. on the Fiscal Year 2005 budget request for public school support by the New Mexico Public Education Department, the School Bus Safety Task Force, appointed by Secretary Garcia in November following allegations that an elementary school bus driver for the Moriarty Municipal Schools was driving drunk, and Indian and rural education. The FY ‘05 public school support request by the Legislative Education Study Committee will be presented at 11:00 a.m.

Education partners and related organizations will make presentations on their legislative priorities beginning at 1:00 p.m. Presentations will be made by the following organizations: National Education Association, New Mexico Coalition of School Administrators, New Mexico Congress of Parents and Teachers, New Mexico Federation of Educational Employees, New Mexico Public School Insurance Authority, New Mexico School Boards Association, Office of Educational Accountability, Regional Education Technical Assistance (RETA), RE:Learning and Strengthening Quality Schools (SQS).

The recommendations of the Governor’s Progress Agenda (GPA) Task Force will be presented at 2:30 p.m. and Secretary Garcia’s community engagement proposals will be discussed at 3:00 p.m.

The next meeting of the PEC will be held on March 3, 2004 in Santa Fe.
