$7.7 Million Allocated to State's Public School Libraries
For Acquisition of Books, Equipment and Resources

(Santa Fe, NM)--The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) and Department of Cultural Affairs announced today that each of New Mexico's 89 public school districts would share in $7.7 million as a result of voter approval of GO Bond C in November 2002. "The funding will provide critical support for public school libraries, which are a vital element of quality instructional programs in New Mexico's schools," said Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica C. Garcia.

The dollars will flow to 682 public school libraries through their local school districts. Each public school with a recognized and established library program, including charter schools, will receive a one-time sum of $5,000 per program, with an additional sum of approximately $13.56 per student. Eligible expenditures include library books, library equipment and library resources that directly support the public school library program.
