SDE Groups Probationary, School Improvement
and Corrective Action Schools

(Santa Fe, NM)- The New Mexico State Department of Education (SDE) today grouped the state's probationary and school improvement schools into the following categories: performance warned, school improvement year one, school improvement year two, current corrective action schools and extension of school improvement. The groupings are available on the SDE's web page at (click here to see the ratings pages).

The ratings for 682 of the state's 764 public schools were announced on October 7. According to the groupings, 30 schools are performance warned, 28 are in school improvement year one, 57 are in school improvement year two, 14 are currently in corrective action and 16 are granted a one-year extension of school improvement.

"The 57 schools placed in school improvement year two have the highest potential to enter corrective action in 2003," said Dr. Melville Morgan, the SDE's assistant superintendent of accountability and information services. "The 16 schools granted a one-year extension of school improvement also are potential corrective action schools for 2003."

The only schools that will be considered for corrective action in 2003 will be the 73 listed as school improvement year two or those listed as receiving a one-year extension of school improvement.

Dr. Morgan also announced three changes since the ratings announcement. Jimmy Carter Elementary in the Albuquerque Public Schools was removed from school improvement and placed in performance warned. The school was rated probationary in 2001 as a new school. However, new schools are not rated until after their second year. In addition, Cesar Chavez Elementary in the Santa Fe Public Schools and Sunland Park Elementary in the Gadsden Independent Schools were removed from school improvement after receiving meets standards ratings twice.

Performance warned (PW) is the designation a school receives the first time it is rated probationary. School improvement year one (SI1) is the designation a school receives with the second probationary rating, when it enters school improvement. School improvement year two (SI2) is the designation a school receives if it has been in school improvement for two or more years. A school is designated for corrective action (CA) after being in school improvement for two or more years without meeting standards for two years. School improvement extension (SIx) is allowed by the SBE for one year for schools showing significant improvement.
