Educational Standards Commission to Hear Probationary
Ratings, School Improvement Appeals
(Santa Fe, NM)- The Educational Standards Commission (ESC) will
hold hearings on Thursday, October 17, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., and
Friday, October 18, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the state Capitol,
Room 315, in Santa Fe to hear appeals by probationary schools slated
for their first year of school improvement and probationary schools
appealing probationary attendance data points.
Under New Mexico State Board of Education (SBE) rules and regulation,
the ESC hears appeals from schools in year one school improvement
that have rated probationary for two years. Should the ESC recommend
that a probationary school should not enter school improvement,
and the SBE approves the recommendation, the school's rating is
changed to "meets standards."
In addition, the ESC hears appeals by probationary schools of
probationary attendance data points. Appeals are allowed if a higher
attendance data point would prevent the probationary rating and
can be explained due to weather conditions, extreme illness, transportation
problems or other such matters. The ESC has the final approval of
the appeal of this data point. If approved, the school's rating
is changed to "meets standards."
The 19-member ESC advises the SBE on issues relating to educational
standards and accountability for New Mexico's public schools. It
meets at least four times per year.
The ESC's recommendations regarding school improvement will be
forwarded to the SBE for consideration during its October regular
meeting in Santa Fe.
