SBE Votes to Continue State Superintendent's Leadership

(Santa Fe, NM)-The New Mexico State Board of Education (SBE) voted on Friday, November 22, to continue the leadership of State Superintendent of Public Instruction Michael J. Davis. The SBE concluded its annual evaluation of the state superintendent on Friday during an executive (closed) session. Following the closed session, the SBE took a public vote to continue with State Superintendent Davis' leadership. It will revisit his job performance in June 2003. The state superintendent serves without a contract at the pleasure of the SBE.

"During State Superintendent Davis' tenure, the SBE has instituted an accountability program that strives to bring all students to acceptable standards of academic performance. With the SBE's and State Superintendent Davis' continuing oversight, education in New Mexico will remain focused each day on teaching and learning," said Ruth M. Williams, director of public outreach for the New Mexico State Department of Education (SDE).

As state superintendent of public instruction since 1997, Davis oversees the state's 89 local school districts, the SDE and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. He is New Mexico's ambassador of goodwill for public education both regionally and nationally.

A public educator in New Mexico for nearly 30 years, his charge is to carry out the SBE's policies and provide educational leadership through interaction with state and federal government officials, private groups and agencies and local educational agencies.
