SDE Names New Director of Professional Licensure

(Santa Fe, NM)- The New Mexico State Department of Education (SDE) announced today the promotion of James Ball of Santa Fe to director of the SDE's Professional Licensure Unit. He formerly held the position of assistant director for the Unit.

"Mr. Ball has worked as assistant director to ensure a qualified teacher in every classroom. As director he will continue to impact our ability to place and support high-quality instructors throughout the state. He brings a wealth of experience to the position," said Patricia Rael, assistant superintendent of Accountability and Information Services.

The Professional Licensure Unit is responsible for determining the qualifications for and issuing licenses to teachers, administrators and other instructional personnel in the state. In addition, the staff provide technical assistance to individuals seeking licensure and to local school officials who must hire licensed staff.

Ball came to the SDE in 1990, after 20 years as a teacher and school administrator. He has served as director of the SDE's Safe and Drug-Free Schools program and as director of the Unit's Professional Practices Program.

He replaces Marilyn Scargall, who retired this year.
