Federal Perkins and Stafford Loan Forgiveness Program
The US Department of Education Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program and Perkins Loan Cancellation Program are intended to encourage individuals to enter and continue in the teaching profession. Under these programs, individuals who teach full time for five consecutive, complete academic years in certain elementary and secondary schools that serve low-income families, and/or meet other qualifications may be eligible for loan forgiveness or cancellation.
Loan forgiveness is determined and processed through the entity that holds your loan (loan servicer). For specific questions regarding eligibility for loan forgiveness, you must contact your loan servicer. The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) does not determine an individual’s eligibility for loan forgiveness, or approve or deny loan forgiveness applications.
The NMPED is responsible for maintaining the list of eligible schools that is provided to the U.S. Department of Education. In general, eligible schools are those that have a free and reduced lunch percentage of 30 percent or higher.
